How does being abused affect your trust with people, even if you didnt know them before it happened?

This topic interest me because some people been through a lot and don't want to get hurt again. Things I know aleady my friend has been through a lot and she chooses not to get close to people becuause she doesn't want to be hurt again. I want to learn if this is the way all people react.
